“Night of Museums”-“Founders and Reformers – josip Juraj Strossmayer, the Croatian Maecenas
- 05:00 pm - in the Old Town centre, Barbat, Lopar and Kampor
If you happen to visit Rab in winter, do not miss the Night of Museums, an event organised by the Rab Open University, (Pučko otvoreno učilište Rab) when numerous museum collections in sacral and secular venues open their doors to visitors. Besides guided tours, the programme includes lectures about individual aspects of the island's cultural and historical heritage, and also workshops for children.
We invite you to visit the ethnographic collection of the Komin Association, which includes articles of daily use that illustrate the everyday life of people in villages: household items, looms, folk costumes, traditional fireplaces and bedrooms, etc.
Another interesting venue is the Monastery of St. Bernardine of Siena in Kampor, which has numerous useful items and items of artistic value collected by the Franciscans over the course of the centuries. These items today make up rich museum holdings that include various collections, such as the archaeological collection, numismatic collection, incunabula collection, ethnographic collection, sacral arts collection, etc. In the monastery, there is also a library, an archive, and the Testen Gallery.
The Town Lapidarium, located in the deconsecrated small Church of St. Christopher, now holds a collection of stone monuments, including fragments of decorative architectural elements, stone decorations from church interiors and residential architecture from the period between the 2nd and 18th century.
The treasury of the former cathedral, today the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, holds valuable liturgical inventory from the former Rab Cathedral. The collection includes reliquaries, crucifixes, monstrances, liturgical vessels, etc. The Romanesque reliquary for the head of St. Christopher is particularly worth mentioning.
The inhabitants of Rab and visitors to the town can also have a guided tour of the premises of the Rab Crossbowmen Association.
On the Night of Museums, entrance to all exhibition spaces is free, and exhibitions are open from 18:00 to 00:00.
